In the long run, people will tend to adopt the beliefs and values they consider to be in their best interest, i.e. which help them to best navigate the universe around them. Free speech will speed up that convergence.

I salute your optimism! How do you interpret research around addiction (used by Advertising/Politics etc), attention and habit forming (lot's of new insight from neuroscience), which suggest that "adopt the beliefs in their best interest" is a easily hijackable process?

You may (even correctly) believe it to be in your best interest to play by the rules of an environment that restricts your agency over your beliefs. Generally, the definition and discovery of your own interests is a non-trivial problem with multiple stable solutions.
