Sex is a (nearly) discrete, binary variable. Biological categories so often have fuzzy borders, though, and intersex is real. Gender, with more inputs, is a continuous variable—but strongly bimodal. Its borders are even fuzzier. ~ Sex is the digital to gender’s analog.

I suspect gender is an immutable biological construct (evidenced across 99.99% of species). As with all biological replication, it endemically contains a level of unpredictably—which in turn creates a subset of variants. If it did not, we would not have evolution.
