Common misconception! Abraham was willing to kill his child for a fully abstract higher purpose. This marks the point where homo sapiens became a state building species. Unlike purely tribal hominids, we had no longer size limits to cooperative groups, and outcompeted them all.

So far I'm with you. But we're still the same humans. So we are constucting ever more complex ideas to satisfy our old reward system.

I thought so, too. Now I realize that our reaction to pleasure and pain is a function of higher level regulation. We can build our own reward system if we can fully master our own attention. (Our puny little brains mean that we'll always be bad at physics, chess and Go, though.)
