The minimal explanation for what is going on still requires that something must hold the state of the universe and execute its transition function. This prime mover, the basic Turing machine ticking away in the void is a debt that freaks me out.
The meaning of information is exactly its relationship to changes in other information. This is computational. Something must implement the relationship, i.e. realize the mechanism that takes care of making that change happen.

Ah, so it sounds like you're thinking in terms of the data/instructions framework. But what if the relations between the quantum fields in an system in one 'moment' are related to those in 'another' by a similar sort of immutable relation? No 'time', nor computation need exist.

Do you have an exact understanding of what a quantum field is (functionally and ontologically), or is this a metaphor?
