The Game of Go has been explored for 2500 years and resulted in a body of theories that Go masters study in Go schools. Alpha Go discovered that human Go understanding was caught in a local optimum, and broke out of it. The game of modern physics started only 130 years ago...

Oh cool! I wasn’t aware Go would require 2 decades of full attention effort to master! May be I underestimated it significantly!

My comparison is possibly misleading. Lee Sedol is not just good at Go, but roughly the best human go player. How long would it take to become the best human physicist? Or rather, how large is the gap between being good and being the best; perhaps it is much smaller in Go.

Sure it can, because Go is algorithmic but modern physics requires experiment. Go is math, and "experiments" can be done for basically free with AI. Modern physics experiments are expensive. AI should be able to kick butt in math, tho.
