This doesn't work, folks. You can't say you want a sexualized, "super fun grab-ass culture" and also be outraged by sexual harassment - because you're wiping away the lines and putting it all on subjective experiencepic.twitter.com/q8k37X3rQW

Work in a restaurant my dude, espec ally in a major city. You will understand that there is a closeness and familiarity that develops naturally and quickly to ease the extreme pressure service workers face on an hourly basis. This is also clearly delineated from sexual assault.

I've worked in restaurants and commercial kitchens, my dude. I know the culture. One of the things being complained about in that article is texts asking for sexy pics (and saying "you meanie" when refused)

You don't get to have both the "let's banter about sex at work" culture and the "he talked about sex at work and it made me uncomfortable" culture. Friedman went beyond that, & I'm not defending him at all.

And you don’t get to pillory this woman bc she drew her line. You don’t get to draw that line for her. Asking for sexts crosses that line 100% and any decent human being understands that. Nobody is defending inappropriate behavior

And if I was pillorying her, that would be an *excellent* point

Ok you are right. She is not literally in the stocks due to your tweet. But you are devaluing and dismissing her experience bc you feel she doesn’t have the right to define what is inappropriate to her.

No, I'm not "devaluing and dismissing her experience" or saying she doesn't have "the right to define what is inappropriate to her". I'm saying that the culture she wants makes sexual harassment inevitable.

You are wrong and again deliberately being obstinate about restaurant culture which is different from law firm culture. There are delineations between goofing off and sexual assault. Just bc you can’t tell the difference between the two doesn’t mean there is no difference.

What you might be missing is that there are huge differences in how people with different backgrounds interpret and experience the same behavior. In a diverse group, you will either have to draw hard lines or find ways to deal with sometimes catastrophic misunderstandings.
