It is important to acknowledge that the current state of social media is *not* flawed, but actually close to optimal. These services are not optimising for the interest of "end users" (you), but for institutional powers that control them.
I think that individuals (think: Mike Cernovic) can exert a very large influence on public opinion with black propaganda without institutional support.

ah yes, this is a most fascinating point! Even historically such figures have existed, but i found they tend to flock to the heard - as raw power is a lonely business, only exercised by true psychopaths.
