It is important to acknowledge that the current state of social media is *not* flawed, but actually close to optimal. These services are not optimising for the interest of "end users" (you), but for institutional powers that control them.
But institutional powers do NOT control social media right now! Which is exactly why they are so concerned about Fake News.

Not sure i fully understand your view on this yet, please help. In my world view, "fake news" is just "black propaganda" or social engineering - which historically and still now takes substantial power to do at scale (see cambridge analytica, Robert Mercer, privatised NSA's etc.)

I think that individuals (think: Mike Cernovic) can exert a very large influence on public opinion with black propaganda without institutional support.

Maybe this is a more appropriate model (?): the systems are optimised so that the users are the product which is sold to the advertisers.

The business case of social media is the provision of an attack surface for the hacking attempts of corporate minds on bio minds. This business case is not the only driver of its design. For instance,
@jack also has political goals in service of a social agenda. - 1 more reply
