The effective cause for most students is authority. Those authorities themselves are getting it from further authorities, going back ultimately to specialist experts in that field, who are not basing it on authority. Laypersons' knowledge are caused by authority, eg my /1

knowledge of astrophysics. That said, I agree with the other two tweets in the thread very strongly. (And not sure we even disagree over the first one beyond semantics...)

Once you understand that knowledge cannot come from revelation, innate ability or intuition, you can infer that your trust in an authority must be exactly the trust you put in the chain of evidence in which they are the last element.
