This kind of depression is tied to a lack of agency over the things that cause your emotions (including the emotional regulation itself). The purpose of meditation in such a case is to switch and bootstrap agencies for (meta)regulation.

Yes—meditation can also be powerfully useful as a way out of depression. But you need to know how to apply it, since done wrong it can make things much worse.

Yes, much of meditation practice seems to be a cargo cult; I wish I had a teacher, because I hit the right buttons mostly by accident.
