Compassion, empathy, seeing yourself in others, this is the critical foundation of anarchy—the necessary premise to even think of a world without rulership. Sociopaths cannot grasp this. And the alt-right is just a coalition of more clearheaded egoists, horrified by altruists. https://twitter.com/nisenohata/status/938971486609580032 …

But if self-interest is historically the foundation of pro-social systems, and the basis on which to innovate and scale pro-sociality, then we find ourselves ontologically committed to egoism as a means to a free and just society.

I think you might be wrong; the historical foundation of prosocial systems has been the identification with a shared higher purpose through religious indoctrination, backed up by a promise of meaning and a threat of material violence.

This ignores a number of instances in history like trader and hunter gatherer societies, but sure there's a measure of substance to the reactionary narrative about the past. But that in no way bounds the phase space of the possible. Nor should we settle for them.

I may be a bit overzealously committed to Tomasello's theory that skills of joint attention constitute a framework of cooperation, but it explains so much. In that view the distinctive cooperative orientation of humans seems to more likely arise first in stag hunting activities.

Yeah, I suspect that Tomasello should have compared his chimps not with normie kids but with aspie kids. Many highly cooperative aspies suck at shared attention.

ASD actually makes a great deal of sense in this framework. You realize "theory of mind" is not developed until years after the first wave of joint attentional breakthroughs around age 1 right?
