I think you might be wrong; the historical foundation of prosocial systems has been the identification with a shared higher purpose through religious indoctrination, backed up by a promise of meaning and a threat of material violence.

This ignores a number of instances in history like trader and hunter gatherer societies, but sure there's a measure of substance to the reactionary narrative about the past. But that in no way bounds the phase space of the possible. Nor should we settle for them.

Hunter gatherer societies do not scale because they are built on a reputation system, i.e. cooperation is based on keeping track of previous interaction. Moving to agriculture required much larger groups, and was probably made possible by aligning shared purposes via religion.
