Codes of Conduct can never replace good intentions, mutual respect and human decency, but in the right hands, they can be an excellent tool for bullying and abuse.
Just an observation based on reading mailing lists documenting how functional communities were invaded by malicious bullies that used the introduction of CoCs as a wedge. I am sure that CoCs can also often be benevolent and even a positive source of identity.

I really did not realize that my tweet would be read as an argument against CoCs in general, which was not what I had in mind. I am sorry, and you are right. I just wanted to point out that they cannot replace good intentions and may even be prone to hacking by competent bad guys
