I suspect that the political and media elites have forgotten that the system is fragile. The "just world" illusion suggests that we need to break the obstacles that prevent the world from becoming just, and we don't realize that instead we risk breaking what we've got.

Don't realize? That seems a bit hard to believe. I mean proximately it seems true. But all the facts are there. Trump is not the first time the system has failed. And even while it's failing, half the populace don't recognize it.

Most people seem to think that the problem is the outgroup (i.e. Trump voters or Democrat voters), not that the government's incentives are not aligned with administering the country as well as possible.
