Why can we not prevent this? Why did we not see this coming? How is it possible half the country does not even see this is happening?https://twitter.com/moshe_hoffman/status/935362267125878784 …

Most people model society based on frames that are constrained by the values and narratives of their group. In a media democracy, the beliefs of the majority will be remotely adjusted and synchronized, but that maintenance is failing.

Sounds like a pretty flawed system that open to some pretty fatal hacking. Why not design a safer system?

Fixing governance is the most important task right now, and one of the most difficult ones, since it involves getting actual power, against those that have it and those that want it.

Yes. But it's also not clear that one can design a system of governance that is immune to trumps. And Kochs.

China, Singapore, Russia arguably have their own problems, but Trumps and Kochs are not that high on the list, so other systems are possible. (I am not suggesting that they are better suited for the US.)

Yes. Agree. Under Saddam no one had to worry about con artists being ELECTED. The question is how do we prevent con men from getting into power either as dictators OR as presidents?

I am not sure that a silly old man getting elected is the problem, but that the institutional infrastructure around him cannot deal with that. The US has a tradition of using actors as head of state instead of political masterminds.
