Software engineering is any more not toxic than any other engineering. JS was forced on people due to a couple of accidents and should have been Lua. PHP is an abomination. But any language can be made useful.

I spent a bit of time writing code in Drupal. I was never very fluent in PHP. I do realize that it is possible to write decent code in PHP, but I don't think that the language supports that very well, nor is it elegant.

Actually PHP today has the best packet manager in the field. The composer revolution has driven PHP to a quality level of tested SOLID code libraries that have same code quality as Java for example.

I have to admit that I am definitely not up to date to what happened to PHP in the last decade.

If you are really interested take a look at the symfony codebase for example: https://github.com/symfony/symfony You can compare it to Pivotals Spring Framework and it uses many patterns from it.

I agree that it is a great codebase. I am still partial against the syntax, but concede that this might be an irrational preference.
