Obviously, modeling others' experience is difficult. But correctly assessing our own experiences can be even harder, especially when they conflict with our self image, or they are outside of our attention.

I perfectly understand that. Do introspection and self-reflection not allow for some ability to "empathize" then (as opposed to being compassionate which I assume doesn't require either)? Empathy is not necessary for optimal human interaction though, is it? (Paul Bloom here)

In my experience, introspection and self reflection did not increase empathy, but compassion. Empathy increases through attention shift, perceptual learning and change in self construction.
