described a learned space? is this the idea of strengthened networks via use and disuse? how would this stand alongside the recall associated with traumatic events?

Strengthening is the result of reinforcement signal * repetition. You can learn in one shot if you have high relevance. Traumatic events have a strong learning signal, so they are prone to create a strong binding prior.
