Replying to @Plinz
how would you describe the "state" of cells? dead, alive or neither?

No cell can survive in a hostile environment. Life is an accord between the cell and the surrounding environment.

It is inadequate to define life from the cell alone. The properties of the environment need to be specified.

Importantly, properties of the cell cannot be abstracted out of the environment. The cell changes the environment. It is not a closed system

A clock depends on its environment to supply energy/dissipate entropy in the right way, too. Ultimately, there is only a single system.

Yes, and the clock will be incorrect if it doesn't model the environment.
