I think the concept may be applied to the entire social groups sometimes.

Empathy level is too high to get rid of any group, pragmatism level is high enough to make the profit of them.

Yes, sometimes it even allows getting rid of some groups (I rushed with the last tweet). But pragmatism often wins over the lack of empathy.

I don't buy these stories; unlike compassion, empathy only applies to ingroup, and asking for empathy mostly comes down to resources.

The group of idiots may be a subset of a larger group which members identify each other as insiders. There are few who see idiots as idiots.

Don't think that is true, but most might not be willing to admit it to others or themselves if it would make them feel bad about themselves
