Pretty much every falsifiable claim from debate last night is easily falsified. So what are these debates about? http://www.factcheck.org/2015/10/factchecking-the-cnbc-debates/ …

.@Moshe_Hoffman Political debates are a gameshow competition that emotionally engage audiences and thereby simulate political participation.

@Plinz yeah ok. But not clear why this engages audience. And why these kinds comments help the politician

.@Moshe_Hoffman Most people form and express opinions primarily for social signaling, only secondary to explain things.

@Plinz yes I agree. This does seem to be about signaling. But what r they signaling? And why do voters like such signals?

@Moshe_Hoffman They signal conformance (and thus trustworthyness and willingness to cooperate) to whomever they believe to be the ingroup.

@Plinz also for Hilary bashing to signal signal good group member, needs to be costly to make, especially if bad group member. What is cost?

@Moshe_Hoffman The cost is mostly that you aggravate people that would not vote for you anyway.

@Moshe_Hoffman Same difference. Some is about rallying support from media owners, some is about picking tropes that signal group identity
