"minimally intelligent agents that we expose to a stressful shared destiny" sounds more than a little tormenting though. if there's a path to a useful AGI that doesn't rely on an agent-structure, isn't that to be preferred? or is it even possible?

Neurons have a stressful destiny. If they don't figure out how to fire at the right time, the other neurons will tell the organism to kill them, and they don't, the organism will usually die.
