It's important to realize that China stopped Covid-19 after 4634 deaths. The US had several weeks advance warning, and now has a death count of 100,000, without an end in sight. This is a massive institutional failure, and everybody just accepts it as inevitable.

I've read they don't have enough cases for studies on vaccine candidates or treatment in China. How will it all play out in the long run?

There is no reason why China would need to develop a vaccine by themselves. Until a vaccine exists, China will not admit travelers from Covid countries without quarantines. Perhaps they won't ever.

I was going to do a count down to "but the Chinese lie!!!!", but it turns out @strelkov201 beat me to it. Doesn't matter if they over/under/misreported, a hundred thousand deaths in the - ostensibly - most advanced country on earth a a disgrace.

Most advanced country is a broad statement for a country with so many problems. Most advanced in which sector? Big tech in silicon valley?

The USA definitely messed up big time but the Chinese death figures are also too low

China didn't have massive pension fund obligations and didn't route victims to unequipped nursing homes and hospices

America is accepting massive institutional failure as inevitable, and has been for four years.

China also claimed to have only 144 flu deaths in 2018: https://www.chinadaily.com.cn/a/201902/22/WS5c6f11daa3106c65c34eaaf7.html … I don't disagree that governments have totally botched the response to this disease, but China's numbers can't be believed.

        Also comparing a fear-instigating dictatorship with a liberty-loving society isn't viable.
