Yes, it's from this paper. The authors fail to point out the obvious explanation: both zebras and giraffes are four dimensional, and their hyper fur is orthogonally aligned

When you think about how the patterns must be generated it's more boring. Both are reaction/diffusion patterns with stochastic activators. The giraffe uses an isotropic spreading function, while the zebra uses an anisotropic one.

Really interesting way to think about generating 2D designs, thanks Duane, great visualization of this. I’m also now thinking about buying a large ink pad and going out in the garden and slicing everything up.
