For me it’s very difficult to tell if somebody actually believes in what they say or if they are trying to convince me of something while knowing it’s bs. I prefer they believe what they say bc even if it is bs the person is still speaking the truth. @Plinz
Heh. I got harshly criticized and unfollowed by Grady Booch when I said that the surgeon general and the CDC were spreading misinformation. He pointed out lack of empathy, which I found weird in that context.

I think that many people experience themselves not as autonomous individuals, but as part of a hive, and they are trying to think and feel with the hive, even if it means sacrificing some local rationality. To influence the direction of the hive, you are required to submit.

It's obviously beneficial for the individual to be part of a powerful hive, if the hive acts as a network of trust that dispenses resources and influence among its members. I suspect that most people are born with an intuitive understanding of that fact.

Lack of empathy for what ? For the SG’s stupidity or for the mistakes the CDC made and they try to cover up. Not very subtle either I must add.

I am trying to understand that, too. Grady is smart, popular, well-meaning and by human standards successful. I suppose that he empathetically identifies with the integrity his hive, more than with his autonomous integrity, and it works well for him.
