They are generally people with a functional intersubjective control model, but often not with terminology and ontology that would be acceptable to scientifically minded people that don't already know what the faithful are talking about.

It seems weird to call experiences illusions, as if it was possible for a real system to experience and see. The perceiver itself is virtual, i.e. "as if".
