Rather than focusing all our colonization effort on #Mars, we could get much of the benefit easier and quicker by colonizing the desert regions of Western Australia. The whole point of a Mars colony is species survival in case of a planetary disinfection event. You may get 70% of the benefit by having cities at the bottom of the ocean, but being in Australia won't help during a large meteor strike

The probability of a large meteor strike over the next few centuries is about 0.000001 - so essentially 0. @tobyordoxford I believe laid out the details in his latest book, and you can read about it in this blog post.https://slatestarcodex.com/2020/04/01/book-review-the-precipice/ …

If you don't believe in global cataclysms that could eradicate humanity on earth, it may make no sense to try to establish a sustainable Mars colony in the next few hundred years, and your plan to settle Australia is unrelated?

There are definitely global risks that could actually matter, such as a biological weapon or deadly natural global pandemic! Also systemic risk to do with politics, economics, supply chains, etc. #kangaroo_mars helps against these for a fraction of the cost of actual Mars...

... and can act as a practice run where we can practice starting a self-sustaining colony right now.

Mars is really not comparable to Australia except for the color of the sand. Mars is more like the moon than like any place on earth, if you want to practice.

You would get practice running a self-sustaining economy and civilization with modern technology. This is like a total easy mode version of Mars, but there would still be significant technological and sociopolitical problems to overcome.
