Young count Władek visited Venice with his family in 1911, where Mann was fascinated by him. The resulting novel was turned into a movie in 1972. The cast of the main actor became the archetype for blonde androgynous young men in Japanese manga, to which Link converged.

If it really is an archetype then it have almost surely emerged anyway, through some other pathway, if Mann had never gone to Venice.
