Many people think “peer review” means “independent replication and confirmation of results” It usually means months of delay while a few folks in your field write an email-length criticism of the paper and ask for more work. The fact that some Nobel prizes have been refuted later says to me that *some* of the "intellectually challenging" part is the art of telling people what they want to hear. The people who find the truth often find things people *don't* want to hear. Facts over feelings.

I think a Nobel prize for refuting a keystone finding is entirely wise. Replication and doing so with the intense scrutiny & attention to detail needed to correct for methodological errors is quite challenging & under rewarded. This is wise.
