My favourite language right now is Rust by an order of magnitude and it will be my go-to language any day now haha. But today it’s cpp/swift on the streets and golang/js/ruby/swift in the sheets. The cool people on stackoverflow would point you to node+electron as your substitute

It's not just for scientific programming either. It does regex, shell scripting, static compilation (tree shaking in the works). Has webservers, MVC frameworks, JS interop, db packages. But the general purpose aspect of the ecosystem isn't as well developed. Also has C++ repl/ffi
