Much of the debate about social media censorship and journalistic bias is actually about whether the purpose of information in the media is descriptive or prescriptive. In the former case it needs to optimize for being true, in the the latter for being authoritative.

It’s similar to the problem of prescription medicines though. 80% of adults probably won’t need restrictions because they understand when they need to consult an expert. We need some epistocratic support for those that are prone to acting against their own interest.

It seems better to have a model that had fuller information with more openly negotiated power consequences for acting out of spec, instead of manipulated information streams. But even in war and policing, information asymmetries are critical to maintaining power.
