Much of the debate about social media censorship and journalistic bias is actually about whether the purpose of information in the media is descriptive or prescriptive. In the former case it needs to optimize for being true, in the the latter for being authoritative.

This is interesting. But I don't see how it would be only one of those things. If social media are relatively open to whatever social interaction may be, then it includes of course both prescriptive and descriptive, & also types of discourse which mix both (such as myth)

People that fight against censorship want to preserve their right to form correct opinions where the authorities are wrong or follow bad incentives. The pro censorship people want to preserve or strengthen the role of media in guiding behavior based on political decisions.
