Is it just me or was it the wrong decision to anchor application menus to the screen instead of the app window? Screens have become arbitrarily large, and we are multi tasking so much.

Fitt’s law. The infiniteness of screen boundaries is underrated. Did you ever used an OS with window-anchored menu bars for a while? It drives me nuts whenever I have to use Windows. Although, essential actions belong to a contextual menu or similar as well.

When you are working on a laptop, having the app menu always at the same position is great. When your apps are scattered on a 45" widescreen monitor, it makes sense that each has its self-contained space, and does not have to fight the others for a distant region in the top left.

I really don't understand why all menus aren't just like context menus that pop up wherever/whenever we tell them to, and are never anchored to the screen/window in any sense.

When I had to use a Mac for a job for half a year, this was one of my major WTFs. So many things about the Mac UI and window management are absolutely frustrating. (normally on Linux with i3 or sometimes Gnome)

Yep, Mac multi-tasking is broken on a fundamental level, especially with todays apps.

Selectable would be good, for smaller vs. larger screens.

All GUIs are on a backlash since ~20years i.t. of consistency and ease of use. That said, there’s for nearly every GUI an extension application that gives you all the menus at your mouse position as popup menus.
