I just can’t see that it was the lack of redundancies and fragility a la Taleb. After all, we now know that large stockpiles of masks and ventilators would not have much changed the outcome

Hardly. There were enough competent people in the CDC, at Harvard, in intelligence. Even a total crony like Azar got the briefings in early January. It was not a crisis of knowledge, but of coordination, because the top ranks felt not incentivized to act on that knowledge.

Perhaps the most important type of knowledge lacking was recent societal experience of an epidemic. Next time there’s news of a bug in China, flights will be stopped quickly & w/o allegations of racism. Next time a stockpile allocation is requested, it will be authorised.
