I'd like to think that there is a moment right before death where the experience of caring about a dynamic simulacrum of a three dimensional world is being suspended, and we go: phew, what a ride, right before we stop caring about the simulacrum of being a person

Only individual deaths or could it apply to civilizations too? Seriously though, it sounds magical. Death is just an end, it doesn't 'happen'. When we say it died it means it stopped living.
