there's a shared heritage in Doom(2016) with the Half-Life series that stands out to me in a profound way. they both have an intense feeling of 'place' about them that most shooters just don't have.
The first Far Cry was a breakthrough imho, because it combined the journey with an open world. Elder Scrolls Oblivion was an important step in making different places more memorable, and GTA San Andreas fully succeeded, even more than the stellar Zelda Breath of the Wild.

i never played far cry 1 but the first half of far cry 3 definitely had that feeling to me

i will say the problem with the open-world games is they often don't feel "lived in" san andreas and fallout new vegas are a good counter-example of that, i need to get a switch and play zelda
