You do get immunity upon recovering from a specific strain of cold - but that doesn't transfer to being immune to other closely related strains (species? breeds? I wonder how many genes they have in common).

So I guess the money question is whether covid has already mutated into strains different enough to fool an immune system. If that had happened, it could explain some of the regional variability being seen. But I haven't seen that reported.
