I remember when democracy started in my own country, and a classmate told me that he was bribed with the promise of a cushy job to go from door to door and convert the villagers to voting for the cabal that made the promise. I still recall my sense of disgust, but it's distant.

Yes, I suddenly realized that political parties emerge over opportunistic cabals that focus on playing the available roles, and that there is little room in the incentive structure for duty to civilization or to statesmanship.

Yes, even political opinions seem to be organisms that grow on the minds of people and defend their territories against each other. Every thought that is not killing its host in the next fiscal quarter may find some room to blossom.
