For an outsider to an academic discipline, it can be hard to distinguish between scientific consensus and groupthink. (From inside a discipline, we can of course flawlessly distinguish the good groupthink from the bad one.)

I hear you. Thinking of several sub-diciplines here. I'm curious to know: Do you believe that if I amass enough data, that some biases will cancel out, and that others will become pointedly apparent so long as I examine critically?

I think it helps to collaborate with people that intimately know the acceptable practices, dominant research groups and historical trends in their own field.
