The reason I try to develop physicalist theories of consciousness isn't because I'm dogmatically convinced that physicalism must be true, but because I want to see if, despite appearances, it might be true.

Good point. In fact, we're screwed if physicalism is 'not true' since there wouldn't be an objective way of talking about consciousness at all. Just like we can't talk about Freedom, God etc, in an objective way. But, who would seriously attempt explaining these based on physics?

Plus 'consciousness' is not a notion that comes from physics, but from our subjective experience. Physics does just fine without that notion, so why include it in physicalism at all, if you run into such troubles.
