i want to live in a time when something amazing happens and for that I want this “theory of everything” to be true. Excitedly showed it to my physicist BF and he said “too many words” before going back to what he was doing

Elsewhere, Wolfram writes that to make progress on physics, you need to be an ex physicist

I'm not sure how to interpret this. Curious about your opinion on his recent piece, Joscha.

The first part is familiar (universe as a foamy lattice generated using replace rules, curvature via growth rate of the volume). He gives up strict reversibility in favor of 'causal invariance' (multiple replacement paths lead to the same outcome), and tries to show how...

...special relativity might be derived from this. He then explains energy as flux of causal links across time and space slices, casually suggests new classes of elementary particles (oligons) that are much lighter than the known ones and might make up dark matter, and ...

... eventually he deals with quantum mechanics. It's very bold and still early days, makes no mention of related work, and Wolfram still does not know the correct automaton rule to produce our universe. I hope to discuss this essay and more detailed material with real physicists.

Mind if I go back to the first part of the question. Why a need for ex physicists? Did he have a different opinion on who should work on it before?

He thinks that physics is stuck, for sociological and cultural reasons. The body of research has become so large that those that enter a paradigm are rarely venturing outside of it.
