Enjoying watching @BBCClick and feeling ambivalent about #AI music. Wondering what @ClaudiaLemke90 and @dmonett would make of it.

Re:
#AI music
once I know some music I may be listening to is generated or "invented" by a machine (either "intelligent" or not), all the supposed magic, the innocent imagination, the reverenced virtuosity, the feeling of being "there," are automatically gone.

I found it very interesting to listen to classical music that was generated by GPT-2. Similarly to text, GPT-2 is capable of deep style transfer, and the creation of plausible arcs. But if the piece becomes too long, it tends to lose coherence.

I think meaning is a function that is able to dynamically explain all sensory data in a unified model. Art is grounded in the experience of meaning. No AI has a unified universe yet.

The "experience of meaning" ... machines are still far from it.

I suspect that we have to grow AIs instead of constructing them. But they will still be machines, just like you and me are machines, and the universe too.

You mentioned "coherence." That seems to be a property or requisite it should fulfil. Any other?

In practice, you also need efficient convergence, isomorphy to control problems and learnability.

Learnability hand in hand with adaptability I guess?
