The following two perspectives are often put in conflict with each other, but aren’t totally in conflict: A) Many factors that continue to harm black communities today are consequences of racist systems. B) Many of these same factors can be mitigated through personal choice.

The crucial point is that the consequences of racist systems manifest as systematic effects on personal choice. A lot of political disagreements in the US are about whether to change the system or whether to influence personal choices.
