The basic idea of religion is that the organization of human beings into tribes or into economic machines is inferior to forming civilizations that are organized into sentient agency. This is the idea that we celebrate today.

Actually (IMHO) pretty much all (organised) religion is about managing economic (including agricultural), health and financial activity. The sacred bit is to there to enforce things, and prevent others taking over :) Not that any of that is a bad thing, mind!

You may have it backwards. Tribal societies are too small for maintaining specialized agriculture, developing literacy etc. Bootstrapping a state requires a scalable vehicle to propagate shared meaning, usually some kind of mind virus. Religion precedes scalable civilization.
