The basic idea of religion is that the organization of human beings into tribes or into economic machines is inferior to forming civilizations that are organized into sentient agency. This is the idea that we celebrate today.

This is so beautiful and yet so utterly and perfectly wrong I think I may just cry. Totally agree with the second part of the statement, except that religion more accurately describes the former rather than latter case. (And Happy Easter!)

All organized religion has to deal with the tension between serving the sacred and running a cult

Ahistorical. Religions began as tribal beliefs. That's the 'basic idea' and core 'civilization' of religion (and the theme, say, of the OT). And we see this continue today--the 'faithful' fall away from religions that try to grow beyond tribalism.

The idea that religions are about mythical beliefs is a fundamental misunderstanding of the Enlightenment. Religions are about imposing an intelligent operating system on society, and all mythology is instrumental to that.

Religion is the organs forming in the organism. Each has it's own set of rules and purpose. Combined, they take care of everything needing done. But only when individuals are free to congregate, and not repressing their uniqueness, do to "social norms" or authoritarian rule.
