Famous Sci fi book, Lucifers Hammer (from the 70s iirc) was based on premise that no place had more than 30d of supplies. Worse now... If the supply chain really breaks.

I read this book as a young student while staying in a hostel in the US. It challenged my political world view like few other books did. I did not come out sharing its opinions of human nature, but I appreciated the consistency of the perspective.

I am a little worried that our food production is based on very efficient chains of companies, where each chain has small profit margins. If one chain files bankruptcy, the whole chain may falter. (I just heard about an example on the radio.)

I share your perspective seems difficult to imagine. Heard from a friend today that in his area produce sections are empty and meat cases are closing. I went to the store today and a few things are missing but they were pretty well stocked. Maybe the breakdown will be regional?

How about cancer medicine shortages?

It's also rather convenient that you should pick such an elastic thing to be unconcerned about. Yes, we can all eat less nice things for a while. What about those who can just barely eat? How about less non-COVID healthcare? Rarer earth minerals? Fewer academic institutions?
