I know the horse has already left the barn, but any chance anyone's ever going to look at the whole of their output in any time frame other than 1/30-2/4 and realize this obsession's a bit overdone? The virus-related tweets right after that one, then more: https://twitter.com/search?q=from%3Avoxdotcom%20(virus%20OR%20coronavirus%20OR%20pandemic%20OR%20wuhan)%20until%3A2020-02-10&src=typed_query&f=live …pic.twitter.com/aOgpk6U45r
They told people not to wear masks, they pushed the "it's just a flu bro" line They don't get to shirk responsibility for the shit they put out just because they were trying to bait SEO clicks with random coronavirus pieces
Politicians are rightfully being dragged for downplaying the virus and leading us into this situation, the media doesn't get to cover up the fact they were doing the same thing and then go around scolding people for it
Either it's A Vital Institution of Democracy and it owns up and publicly eats shit for journalistic malfeasance that actually harmed public health, or it gets run out of public life and gets banned for #FakeNews, just like it was advocating not so long ago
If you read the totality of Vox's coverage of this story in February there is no way you don't come away thinking this is very serious shit. I'll be the first to say their coverage of cultural issues is absolutely awful, btw. In this case? Even the wrong stuff is on the pols.
It was the US Surgeon General who said "Don't wear a mask."
And it should have immediately been questioned because of the fact that medics were insisting on wearing them
It's not that simple. There's the argument that handling them correctly is complicated and that handled incorrectly they do more harm than good.
This argument is usually criticized by pointing at studies that masks reduce respiratory infections by ~75% if worn by uneducated members of the public, and the apparent absence of studies showing that they do more harm than good.
Yeah, I know. The counterargument is that in communities that wear them have other meaningful differences.
I appreciate that you are trying to be fair to Vox (especially since I suspect that you don't like their style)! The studies that are mostly cited were from Australia, not from Japan. It seems that the 'masks can be harmful' argument is not supported by actual research.
