The fact that some people who saw the crisis coming first are also now predicting the most horrible/radical outcomes could be a sign of their prescience, but it could also be that they're guided by a doom aesthetic whose past performance might not be indicative of future accuracy

People said the same thing after Katrina. They continued to say the same thing when presented with the annual predictions in major media about how a hurricane could flood the bowl in New Orleans, leave it flooded for many days, and kill thousands. Nobody could have known.

Not really obvious; there were epidemics in the past, none of them went to this stage;

And when there was information about this one, it was no longer an open ended prediction of a pandemic to come — it was data. Interpreting it honestly isn’t magic.
