Yeah. Degrees are only useful if you don't have anything else to show.

hmm so you personally don’t value a degree as much over experience / portfolio. a lot of the world needs to be hired. but are people that have a lot to show and still go to college being inefficient?

A degree is an excellent opportunity to build a portfolio. It also shows that you are able to persist and deal with insanity :)

In seriousness, the best way to get hired is through a network of people that worked with you in the past. A big advantage of good schools is that you get to know many people that will matter in ten years from now.

have people then mattered for you ten years later? do you think you couldn’t have found those types of people working in those roles anywhere else if you didn’t go to a good school?

If you try to prepare exams or work on projects with other students, you quickly learn that many are duds and some are incredible to work with, at a low cost. When you hire duds, the cost is pretty high. If you can get the good ones, you can pull off anything.

There are good students at almost any school. The high end schools have almost exclusively good students, because they can afford to be extremely selective. This makes the high end certificate so valuable, in addition to the network of these students.
