example of how "follow the expert advice" can fail: CDC isn't officially recommending everyone wear masks bc there arent enough masks in US, & they need to conserve for medical staff this isn't conspiratorial, just an acknowledgement of the cross-pressures institutions face

- the actual science suggests a benefit from masks - in China & elsewhere with high availability, everyone wears masks - US is trying to increase mask availability CDC guidance for individuals & businesses is optimizing for population-level outcomes, not individual rationality

I am afraid that there is a possibility you are giving the CDC too much credit. HCWs usually buy their ppe from specialized commercial vendors with a b2b supply chain, not from the paint removal section of home depot.

i'm criticizing the CDC for essentially lying to people in a misguided attempt to prevent hoarding & to downplay the federal govt's mismanaged response but you're obv right that the personal & b2b markets are different. still plenty of overlap, including supply chains etc though

Have you seen this? https://time.com/5794729/coronavirus-face-masks/ … Do you think it's possible that nobody in the ranks of CDC has bothered to read the Australian studies, and they only have a review of a handful of outdated US papers that was compiled by an intern?

that's an amazing article that will not age well. i might be confused but aren't we in agreement that the CDC is both incorrect & making a tactical mistake by telling people not to wear masks?
